Directing Statement
What you’ll see in my directing is a pretty good reflection of who I am. I am attracted to work that allows me to play with nostalgia, hyper-femininity, and bold colors. I love to make my cast feel like rockstars, listen to them, give them space to feel creative and have input. I love to create order, symmetry and patterns in my staging but then… I love to make MESSES, challenge the structure that’s been built and RELEASE! As a director, my taste in genres and projects ranges from Chekhov to Seussical the Musical, devised community productions to music videos. I enjoying leaning into camp, vintage aesthetics, and am highly influenced by drag and pop-culture. I love directing because I love people, figuring out why we do what we do, and figuring out how to communicate that to an audience effectively and with an impact. My goal as a director is to be as bold as I can in order to inspire others to live life with their imaginations, be authentic, be kind.
For my process— With scripted work, I begin each process with thorough analysis of the script and begin intentional dramaturgical research. I’m curious about why we bring certain plays to audiences and what impact it can have in our community or in our culture. My work often has a strong aesthetic point of view and I relish working with designers, playwrights, storytellers and collaborators who can support, challenge and enhance my vision. I love a collaborative, creative environment where all participants are aligned in the why. I also enjoy working as a writer/director. I’ve written, directed and produced my own work including: Death by Chocolate, Spilled Milk (and other messy bits) and I’m an Actress! (a solo performance). I’ve devised community projects, produced and directed small pieces for local events and love discovering ways to create accessible theatre as a director.
I believe the rehearsal room is a sacred place and when a safe, brave, and playful environment is cultivated- magic can happen! As a leader, I value establishing community agreements and having a consent centered workplace where participants can bring their authentic selves to the process. My experience as a producer, teacher, actor and intimacy choreographer benefit me in my position as director giving me knowledge to best support my collaborators and casts.
